Prince Buster, born Cecil Bustamante Campbell on May 24, 1938 on Orange Street in Kingston Jamaica. He is a singer, songwriter and producer whose work has contributed significantly to the development of Ska and Rocksteady music in Jamaica.
His involvement in commercial music started in 1957 while he worked with Coxsone Dodd’s sound system. He left Coxsone in 1959 to start his own sound system called ” Voice of the People”
The year 1961 saw Buster making his debut into music production, when he released his first single “Little Honey/Luke Lane Shuffle”, as well as produced the song “Oh Carolina” by Folkes Brothers. Perhaps his most popular song and favourite of many Jamaicans is “Wash Wash” in 1963 featuring Ernest Ranglin on bass.
In 2001 he was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government for his contribution to the development of music.
He died on September 8, 2016 at the age of 78 at his home in Miami Florida.
