Sorrel is the traditional drink of choice for Jamaicans during the Christmas season.
The scientific name for sorrel flower is Hibiscus Sabdariffa, otherwise known as Roselle Plant. The plant is not indigenous to Jamaica. It originated in Africa and can be found in other parts of the world in places like Mexico, Argentina, India, China and the Caribbean.
Health Benefits
It is high in vitamins and minerals and is a good source of antioxidants. It is rich in vitamin C and also contains vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin B-6, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium niacin and riboflavin. It also contains polyphenolic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins.

How To Make Jamaican Sorrel Drink
INGREDIENTS
1lb sorrel sepals (petals)
2-4 oz. ginger
2 liters of water
sugar or honey
dash of Jamaican white rum
Spices (optional)
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp ground pimento
1 tbsp orange peel or lemon peel
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
Alcohol (optional)
rum
wine
PREPARE:
1. Wash sorrel petals
2. Grate ginger.
3. Place sorrel, ginger and optional spices in a mixing container
4. Boil water, pour on sorrel and ginger.
5. Cover and leave to infuse for 4-6 hours or more
6. Strain
7. Add a dash of rum
8 Sweeten to your taste.
8. Add optional rum or wine
10. Serve chilled.

Experiment with the optional ingredients and add the flavours you love best
