Welcome to Rocksteady: The Golden Era of Jamaican music.
During the late 1960’s Ska music began to evolve into a slower, more relaxed and soulful tempo called Rocksteady. The bass became heavier and prominent, horns took a supporting role in the background and was replaced by the electric guitar, organ and piano. It is believed that the genre derived its name from a popular song in Jamaica in 1966 “The Rock Steady” by Alton Ellis.
Rocksteady was the dominant musical genre in Jamaica between 1966 to 1968. Its duration was short lived but its impact on the Jamaican culture is insurmountable.
The most extensive production ot Rocksteady music were done by Clement Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One Records and Duke Reid’s Trojan Records.
